VETERAN racing presenter Robert Cooper often seems to get the short straw in interviews on Sky Sports Racing.

He regularly gets the cold shoulder from Ryan Moore but last week he didn’t get a very warm reception from jockey Graham Lee after Cooper seemed to question a ride, and a winning one at that.

It wasn’t the best way to begin an interview and jockeys are often subjected to some less inspired question by interviewers. (Rishi Persad once asked French rider Maxime Guyon “How much had you up your sleeve?” after winning on Solow). However, Lee had little reason to take offence.

It was in contrast to the attitude of Britain’s champion jockey-elect Oisin Murphy, who has really been impressive in all his media work this year.

And even when things didn’t show him in a positive light (for example, his failed breath test). In a fine season, surely the first of many titles, he was always polite and accessible.

One race that might have got away for Murphy this season was the Irish Champions Stakes when Deirdre got stopped in her run.

It wasn’t the best ride, in a high-profile race with the spotlight on him, yet Murphy was patient and gracious in answering Nick Luck’s questions immediately afterwards when unsaddling, even though he must have been very disappointed for connections.

His profile grows each season and it should be a great bonus for racing, when most jockeys are unfortunately anonymous to the wider sporting public.
