Cork open

the doors

WE often criticise racecourses for not doing enough to encourage racegoers to come racing but we have to hand it to Cork, and the county Meath tracks for making great efforts to engage the public and potential punters.

Top jockeys Davy Russell, Jamie Codd and Paul Townend, along with trainer Joseph O’Brien, will take part in Cork’s launch of the jumping season this Thursday on a panel hosted by racing journalists Tommy Lyons and Dave Keena. The evening will be relaxed, with open panel discussion and audience interaction.

“There’s someone from every angle in racing and a chance for the public and potential owners to meet in a relaxed atmosphere,” Cork manager Andrew Hogan says. And it’s all free!

‘A Celebration of Cork Racing’ takes place on Thursday, October 26th at the Clayton Hotel, Silver Springs at 7pm. Prizes on the night include a VIP trip to the Kerry Group Hilly Way Chase Day and the 2018 Dublin Racing Festival.

To book your free ticket email rsvp@corkracecourse.ie or contact Niamh Doyle, Cork Racecourse, Mallow, Tel: 022 50207.

The Meath tracks hold their launch the following Thursday in the Ardboyne, Navan. More next week.

Shortt recalled

WALKING around early at Punchestown on Thursday, the conversations overheard were all about John Shortt and his good humour. Others spoke of the loyalty of racing people who had come together in his memory.

Some of the ‘legends’ own family members were less charitable. “Let’s give them some abuse!” was the cry as the motley crue of former stars emerged from the weigh-room.

However, the Legends certainly did John Shortt proud.
