DEATH and taxes no longer seem quite the certainties they once were, but you can still rely on Minding to give her running, whatever the distance, whatever the race set-up and whatever the opposition.

She was at it again at the Curragh on Sunday, this time against a quartet of smart older fillies in the mile and a quarter Sea The Stars Pretty Polly Stakes. She hammered them, winning by four and a half lengths and five from Bocca Baciata and Lucida.

Again, the pace was uneven and the overall time modest – just a 75 timefigure – but the winner came back quickly on ground that was slower than 24 hours earlier. Judged by her closing sectional, Minding could easily be better than ever just now, and her versatility opens plenty of options for her.

Minding’s time was still 2.31s quicker than that recorded earlier on the card by Sir Isaac Newton in winning the International Stakes by three-quarters of a length from Chemical Charge.

Sir Isaac Newton’s timefigure comes out at a paltry 52, but he managed to run the last three furlongs in just 33.98s, which is the fastest at the course this year despite the rain-softened ground. The son of Galileo had a Timeform “squiggle”, denoting unreliability, until recently but seems to have turned over a new leaf.
