LAST week was the first low-key one in Britain since racing resumed on June 1st, with just a smattering of Group 3s and listed races.

Those Group 3s went to Tabdeed (Hackwood Stakes at Newbury), Eagles By Day (Silver Cup at York) and Queen Jo Jo (Summer Fillies’ Stakes at York), worth sectional ratings of 111, 113 (though muddling and possibly questionable) and 104 respectively.

Tabdeed’s win was a last-to-first affair after Dakota Gold again did too much up front, but his overall time was only 0.27s (less than two lengths) quicker than the two-year-old Method’s had been in winning a listed race earlier on the card, and Method comes out well from the comparison.

A figure of 108 puts Method behind only Master Of The Seas (110), Campanelle and Tactical (both 109) of youngsters seen out in Europe so far, and talk of him contesting some of the better races hereafter does not look at all fanciful.

He did more for his reputation than had Ubettabelieveit in winning at the same grade at Sandown a couple of days earlier, a penalty kick with Eye Of Heaven bombing out, but one that Ubettabelieveit converted off the woodwork, as it were, in a time 1.77s (over 10 lengths) slower than Magic J managed in the preceding handicap.

Magic J gets a figure of 97 but Ubettabelievit only 66, compared to a 98 the time before.

There were also listed wins from Subjectivist at Hamilton on Thursday (104, from a horse steadily going the right way), Trueshan at Haydock on Friday (110, from one who could make an impact against some of the better middle-distance/stayers), Cabaletta at Newbury on Saturday (99), Moss Gill at York on Saturday (109), Global Giant at Newbury on Sunday (111) and Surf Dancer at York on Sunday (107).

Global Giant had finished fourth in an especially good listed race at Sandown the time before but still stepped up further in beating 109-rated Extra Elusive by a length and probably has a group race in him if placed carefully.

At a lesser level, the wins of Enable’s close relative Portrush in a maiden at Yarmouth (85 on just her second start), of D’Bai in a strong conditions stakes at Haydock (110), Qaysar under 10-04 in a handicap at Haydock (106 minimum), Sinjaari in the John Smith’s Cup at York (103) and Lahore under 9-08 in a handicap at York (105) are all worth calling out.

Sinjaari actually came out third-best at the weights behind runner-up Certain Lad (109) and third-placed Fifth Position (104) in a race which could throw up a fair few winners. Tinandali in fifth (goes up to 103) was one who particularly caught the eye.
