THERE were a fair few promising efforts in the supporting races across the two days of Future Champions Weekend at Newmarket, including juvenile course records from Mrs Danvers in the five-furlong Cornwallis Stakes on the Friday and Coronet in the 10-furlong Zetland Stakes on the Saturday.

Neither distance is much used by decent youngsters, but these still represent useful relative times and show that the ground was firmer than good on both days.

Mrs Danvers, who gets a 112 timefigure, has been superbly campaigned by Jonny Portman but will surely find it difficult to retain her unbeaten record against stronger opposition from here on.

Coronet has now won two from two and sectionals suggest she will prove better still than the 104 figure she posted here.

All in all, there are good reasons for thinking that the Zetland Stakes was punching above its listed status on this occasion.

While not so fast in relative terms overall, the win of the Tony Martin-trained Laganore in the Listed Pride Stakes on Friday is worth picking out for special mention.

In a steadily-run race, Laganore cruised through from last to score by four lengths from the useful Lady Of Camelot, running a 99 timefigure but a notably swift 34.44s for the last three furlongs: a group contest could yet come her way.

The fastest older-horse timefigure of the week came on the Friday at Newmarket in the Dubai 100 Challenge Stakes, won by Aclaim, running to 111. The Martyn Meade-trained colt was running in handicaps not long ago but is really thriving and effective from six to eight furlongs.

That said, this was not all that strong an event for a Group 2, and it is still something of a stretch to envisage Aclaim winning at the very highest level.

Best Solution recorded a useful timefigure of 104 on Saturday when winning the Group 3 Autumn Stakes, though runner-up Zainhom (99) showed impressive speed to come through from behind and may be an even better long-term prospect. Third-placed The Anvil was a rare reverse for Aidan O’Brien but will surely win races with his sights lowered slightly.

The John Gosden-trained Astronomy’s Choice won only a maiden on the Friday, but this was an impressive debut from a well-bred but clearly green filly, and her 89 timefigure is well above average for a race of this type.
