GOOD timefigures on the flat were few and far between back in Britain and Ireland.

Best of the week was the 113 figure put up by Gifted Master in winning the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy at Newmarket. He was another horse to get loose on the front under Pat Smullen, but in his case he was going fast enough and continued to go fast enough all the way to the line.

Esoterique won the only Group 1 in Britain and Ireland during the week - the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket - but in a substandard overall time, worth a figure of 105.

The pace in this was fair, rather than stronger, which explains that rating, at least in part, and the André Fabre-trained mare already has several efforts in the book that clearly identify her as high-class.
