WIND-assisted course records also went the way of Kew Gardens in the Listed Zetland Stakes and Withhold in the Cesarewitch on the Saturday at Newmarket. But some reports that Abel Handy had broken the juvenile best for five furlongs in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes the day before are incorrect, as video-editing software shows the time was 58.9s, give or take a few hundredths of a second, and not the faster hand time quoted in some quarters.

The 10-furlong Kew Gardens won at is a distance seldom used by youngsters, and the time he recorded translates into a useful 101 timefigure. But his closing splits were impressive, ending with a 12.15s final furlong that was comfortably fastest across the two days. Talk of a Derby/St Leger campaign next year for Kew Gardens seems realistic.

Ghaiyyath (109 timefigure) ran quicker overall in relative terms than Kew Gardens but was less impressive at the business end, which included a 12.9s final furlong.

The other major two-year-old race at Newmarket was the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes on Friday, which went to the maiden Altyn Orda, but in a time – worth a timefigure of 104 – which should leave no-one in much doubt that she is up to scratch for a winner of this contest.

The best older-horse flat timefigure of the week came from Limato in winning the Group 2 Challenge Stakes on Friday in a time just outside the all-aged course and distance record. Limato gets credited with a 117 figure but was fractionally slower late on than U S Navy Flag proved to be 24 hours later, a reflection of an even more punishing early pace.

Trainer John Gosden has been praised for his handling of Enable and Stradivarius (perhaps less so Cracksman) this campaign, but Monarchs Glen has probably been a trickier project.

The hard-pulling son of Frankel lost his way a bit early this year, beaten at an odds-on price in the Group 3 Classic Trial at Sandown in April, but has been nursed back and won a Group 3 at Newmarket on Saturday in the Darley Club Stakes.

Monarchs Glen’s time was not special – Timeform went 97, I favour 108 – but his closing sectional (35.58s for three furlongs) was sharp, and he should not be considered substandard for the grade.
