THE other timing news from the Curragh at the weekend was less ambiguous. The times recorded by Fascinating Rock in winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup and by Beacon Rock in winning the Airlie Stud Gallinule Stakes – both slowly-run races – were poor but the one recorded by Caravaggio in winning the Listed Marble Hill Stakes was fast - seriously fast.

The son of Scat Daddy stopped the clock at just 62.22s, which translates into a timefigure of 115. By way of comparison, the previous best by a juvenile in Britain and Ireland this season was the 100 recorded by Sutter County. The runner-up in the Marble Hill, Mister Trader, went into a clear second with a timefigure of 107.

Caravaggio looks a likely Royal Ascot winner and could be a horse for the Nunthorpe (in which juveniles are favourably treated) further down the line. It is worth noting that he beat third-placed Ambiguity by half a length further than had the highly promising Psychedelic Funk at six furlongs at Naas.

Fascinating Rock had a 125 timefigure to his name when beating Found in the QIPCO Champion Stakes at Ascot last year and again had that filly’s measure but with a far more modest figure of 63, this time.

Beacon Rock’s race was even more slowly run, resulting in a rapid 35.3s closing sectional and a timefigure of just 38.

This looked a weak Group 3 beforehand and certainly looks an uninformative one after the event.
