Scrumptious Simon and the other two

AS well as a slap up lunch of Bollinger champagne, cured Severn and Wye smoked salmon with caviar jelly and seared scallops, bone marrow crusted rib and fillet of beef, then a desert of raspberry cannelloni with anise hyssop ice cream, followed by a fantastic cheese board, courtesy of Longines, Brendan McArdle, The Irish Field’s ‘everywhere’ man had a bit of fun with the ladies selling buttonholes on the way into Royal Ascot.

BUTTONHOLE

Having carefully chosen his buttonhole of a peach coloured rose, Brendan found that a small shiny stone was being pressed into his hand which the buttonhole seller insisted he hang onto for luck.

Just as Brendan’s hand closed on the lucky stone, he was held by a vice like grip and told: “That’ll be 10 quid to you darling!’’ Ah hem.

Brendan initially started to back off but a dark cloud of superstition passed in front of his eyes and he got Malachy Ryan manager of Moyglare Stud, who also got a `lucky’ stone to pay up. Happily, these men have bottomless pockets.
