MICHAEL Browne, who works with trainer Terence O’Brien at Woodstock Stables in Carrigtohill, Co Cork, is delighted with the uptake in their 30-member Terence O’Brien Racing Club.

John Kelleher and Richie Gardiner are the men who head up the club and the team have been full-on developing the website and promoting the club through social media platforms. The yard is just a 20-minute drive from Cork city centre with state-of-the-art training facilities, allowing horses to be campaigned to the highest level. Amenities at Woodstock include grass gallops, sand gallops, a schooling strip, an indoor school, horse walkers, turnout paddocks and well-ventilated barns.

Equal shares

“The shares are equal,” Michael explains, “with prize money equally shared among members. You have the option to pay for your whole year’s membership up front or pay a buy-in fee and then pay monthly by direct debit.

“At the end of the year members have the option to renew or opt out. We want to make everything as straightforward as possible. Terence sources the horses and all kinds of people have joined up. The club’s horses are Mahlers Dollar, who was third in a maiden at Ballindenisk point-to-point, and the unraced Blaze Of Light. We are very lucky with our owners; they all stayed when the coronavirus crisis hit. For us it’s like picking up where we left off after a rearranged summer holiday.”
