SOUTHERN REGION,

BALLYFERRITER, DINGLE

THE penultimate meeting of the 2017 season took place on Beal Ban Strand, Ballyferriter, Dingle last Sunday and the King brothers ruled supreme as they shared three winners. Rory recorded a double including victory in the featured Beal Ban Derby where Chamber Of Secrets followed up his third place in the big Glenbeigh Invitational with an impressive win for Glenbeigh owner Gerard O’Connor.

Rory tracked the leaders into the final straight and once he asked for an effort they quickened clear to win from Who’s Your Daddy.

Rory also landed the 12-furlong race as Ballybrown Boy saw off the brave challenge of top weight Athea Jade who was unable to overcome the welter weight burden he was assigned to shoulder.

Earlier in the afternoon younger brother Danny won the 14.2hh race on Rosa Parks who stayed on strongly to win for his father Richard.

SHEEHY DOUBLE

Dylan Browne-McMonagle made the journey from Letterkenny in an effort to keep his national rider championship hopes alive but he drew a blank.

Mikey Sheehy extended his lead with a double but only one of those wins will be added to his tally as riders are only allowed to count their winners from two of the three race categories.

In the 13.2hh race Carrig Ava confirmed her liking for the beach by making all under Mikey Sheehy, a repeat of her recent Glenbeigh win. Mikey’s win on The Bosses Daughter for Dooks owner Patty O’Sullivan in the 15hh race was a very important success as it probably ensures that the gap between himself and Dylan is too large to bridge with only one meeting remaining.

After coming close on both days in Glenbeigh, it was a well-deserved win for the filly who led from two furlongs out, stretching clear of Xantico who took the runner-up spot under Rory King.

Racing opened with the 12.2hh race and Wexford rider Conor Walsh, fresh from his bumper day at his local Taghmon meeting, made it 20 winners for the campaign as Another Tiger overcame a tardy start to win from Templehill Tamara.

Only two faced the starter in the 14hh race where Raynuso continued her strong finish to the season as she overcame the brave challenge of Tell The Story to win by a length and a half in the hands of Michael O’Connor.

MCGUANE FAMILY

The McGuane family from Castledermot in Kildare got an early return on their investment as recent acquisition Banned Substance took the mile race in the hands of Michael who delivered him with a perfectly timed run to win from Razzle Dazzle and Half Price in a thrilling finish.

The concluding 12-furlong maiden race was a dramatic affair with six of the nine runners failing to properly negotiate the sharp bend that sent them out on the final mile.

Western Force finished strongly to win from experienced beach horses Top of The Range and Close Encounter. The winner is owned by Rathkeale based Billy Tierney and was partnered by Shane Crosse. This was the 21st winner of the season for Shane who will be embarking on an apprenticeship with Joseph O’Brien shortly.

Last meeting

THE curtain will come down on the 2017 season tomorrow with the final meeting in Athea, Co Limerick when the first race will start at 1pm.
