THE Royal Ascot Trials and Ladies Day returns to Naas Racecourse on Sunday, May 19th with top-class racing action and stunning fashion. Head fashion judge, RTÉ broadcaster Lottie Ryan, will lead the charge in the search for the best dressed lady.

This year’s theme is all about ‘breaking the mould’ so don’t be afraid to be adventurous when it comes to style. The total prize fund has a value of €8,500 and the winner of the competition will bag herself and her 19 closest friends an overnight stay in the Manor House in Palmerstown House Hotel with dinner. And a €1,000 Kildare Village shopping voucher.

We have teamed up with Naas Racecourse and are offering one lucky reader the chance to win a pair of tickets.

It’s all about racing on Nationwide

NEXT Wednesday, May 8th, RTÉ’s Nationwide programme will celebrate the end of the National Hunt season from the Punchestown Festival.

Mary Fanning goes behind the scenes with Noel Meade at his Tu Va Stable to see the day to day grind of a National Hunt yard and see the eight-time champion trainer at work.

She also chats to stable jockey Sean Flanagan about his alliance with Meade over the years.

Anne Cassin follows ladies champion points rider Liz Lalor at the Lisronagh meeting in Tipperary earlier in the season and Helen McInerney gets fashion tips from style icon and Carlow-based Faith Amond. Faith has two sons in the racing industry, Busty in Gordon Elliott’s yard and Bubba in Jessica Harrington’s base.

The programme airs at 7pm on RTÉ One.

Mongol Derby

LARA Prior-Palmer rode in the Mongol Derby, the longest horse race in the world, which follows Genghis Khan’s horse-messenger route over more than 1,000 km.

She signed up at the age of 19 (“a bundle of urges, a series of plunges”) and 10 days of riding 25 semi-wild ponies a long way around Mongolia followed.

Half the riders don’t finish. A novice, aside from tips from her Olympic-rider aunt Lucinda, she becomes the youngest winner, and the first woman. Read her memoir Rough Magic and relive the terror and sweat.

Punchestown ticket winners

THANKS to all entries for our Punchestown tickets competition proving a caption to a photo of Jackie and Willie Mullins with Eddie O’Leary and the trophy for Voix Du Reve at Fairyhouse.

Michael Falconer from Piltown was the winner with Willie saying to Eddie: “Ye won’t be taking this back from me.”
