WE feared last week’s racing quiz set by Rory Delargy would prove too difficult for readers but three of you scored full marks.

Three of the 25 questions caught out a lot of people. Several of you said that the original Gigginstown House Stud colours had “no buttons” but the correct answer was that the silks featured a maroon disc rather than star.

More than a few of you suggested Richard Hughes was the jockey whose father had ridden a Champion Hurdle winner. However, the rest of the clue ruled him out and the correct answer was the original ‘long fellow’, Lester Piggott.

Finally, many readers struggled to name the Royal Ascot runner which ruled Walter Swinburn out of the winning ride aboard Shergar in the Irish Derby. It was Centurius in the King Edward VII Stakes, and not Hard Fought in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.

Top marks

Scoring top marks were Paul Magill (Ballygowan, Co Down), Richard Brabazon (Curragh) and Liam Elvidge (Knocktopher, Co Kilkenny). They win branded merchandise from Connolly’s Red Mills, Foran Equine and Carr Day & Martin.

Consolation prizes of six-month subscription to Irish Country Magazine go to both Becky Kelly (Ballysimon, Co Limerick) and Joette Gallagher (Glanworth, Co Cork), who had just one wrong answer each.

Spot prizes of a baseball cap from The Irish Field go to Timmy Coyle, James O’Brien, Sarah O’Sullivan, Roisin Fitzpatrick, Dave Donohoe and Peter O’Reilly. Peter had three wrong answers but has entered all our quizzes since the shutdown and has just missed out on a prize every time.

Thanks to Rory for setting the questions and to the Connolly’s Red Mills group for the prizes.
