JONATHAN O’Grady, son of trainer Edward, was a proud man when we spoke to him recently after he had emerged triumphant as the Irish open backgammon champion at the tournament held in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire on October 23rd.
Jonathan likened it to Leicester’s victory in last year’s Premier League when they were 5000/1 shots at the beginning of the season.
“There’s a thriving circuit around Ireland with players from England coming over,” he said. Jonathan is happy to rest on his laurels for the moment. “I don’t think I’ll be taking on J.P. (McManus) anytime soon!” he added.
BRAVE Ruth Murphy has been in touch looking for support for a charity skydive to be held on November 26th in aid of the Irish Injured Jockeys fund and Temple Street Children’s University Hospital.
Ruth, who rides out part time for Dermot Weld, explained: “I have never done a skydive but luckily you dive in tandem, strapped on to an instructor. I rode in a charity race and visited Temple St Hospital and that inspired me to try and give something back.’’
Contact Ruth on 087 7771983 or donations to https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/skydive-in-aid-of-irish-injured-jockeys-and-temple-street-ch would be greatly appreciated.
