THAT fearsomely brave man Rathmore Stud owner and Qatar Racing’s Irish representative Peter Molony takes up his latest challenge on August 1st when he flies out to Ulan Bator in Mongolian to tackle this year’s Mongolian Derby, along with David Redvers, Kevin Darley Gareth Jones and Chips Broughton.

The Mongolian Derby recreates the long distance postal system set up by Genghis Khan in 1224 and things haven’t changed much.

“It’s really an individual event but we have entered together for support,’’ confirmed Peter during the week. “It’s a 1,000km marathon in 40km stages and takes about 10 days. Part of the, er, fun is to deal with those tough Mongolian ponies, who don’t suffer fools gladly. You have to choose your own pony and catch it and stick with that one for the 40km stage. I believe they are not that keen on stopping and have their own lively steering.’’

Presumably he is a super fit rider?

“I’m pretty fit but gym fit. This is a different thing all together and I’m told food wise it’s lamb stew all the way, including breakfast.’’

The best of luck and shortly, Molony hopes to organise a Just Giving page for donations to the Irish Injured Jockeys fund.
