TRACY Piggott is a fan and on Wednesday she opened an exhibition of equestrian artist David Baird’s works in the Craft Granary, Cahir, Co Tipperary which runs through until August 17th.

David Baird first began on this Horse People collection of painting almost 10 years ago. He now works constantly on this record of people connected to various aspects of the equine industry. He strives for an excellent likeness, recognisable posture and those small personal details which capture a readily identifiable representation of each character. The result is top class as David shares his admiration for that wondrous beast – the horse.

The painting themselves, although simple looking figures and heads, are extremely detailed. Layer upon layer of stippled pigment is applied to create the required patina, each piece taking approximately three to four weeks to complete.

Born in England, David began visiting Ireland 20 years ago and he has made his home in Clonmel since 2003.

“Racing appears to predominate my paintings. Parade rings are a near perfect arena for what I now call “Artarazzi”. If horses are there to be seen, then so too are all those involved; owners, trainers, jockeys and stable hands.’’
