POPULAR RTÉ One programme Nationwide is producing a racing-themed programme which will air on RTÉ One at 7pm on Monday.

The programme will celebrate the day out and meet the punters at the Dubai Duty Free Derby today and will include a feature with Tracey Collins from the historic Conyngham Lodge stables, covering her comments on the industry as an employer, the fun of syndication and the story of Tommy and Terry Rogers and their success with Majestic Queen.

The second half of the programme will concentrate on the the Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff awards. It will show four different personalities, Lorna Buggle, head girl at Richard Brabazon’s Rangers Lodge, she is a science graduate who choose racing as her career. Then the programme travels to John Oxx’s yard to meet `Slim’ James O’Neill who left the inner city 42 years ago to pursue his career. The importance of administration in any racing yard is explored with Godolphin award recipient, Martina Murphy Dunne in D.K. Weld’s yard.

Anne Cassin will also visit the grooms’ canteen at the Curragh Racecourse to meet Kathleen Hanratty, another recipient of a Stable Staff award, where she keeps all the grooms and stable staff fed and watered.

Oaktree Racing DETAILS of joining this racing club entails a once off entry fee of €100 with an additional monthly payment of €50. Included in this is membership of the club, a share in each horse owned or leased by the club, access to the club privilege card, invitations to events run by the club and access to the owners’ enclosure on race day. You will be entitled to a vote in the running of the club and can become a member of the club’s committee.

The club currently have a horse leased in training with Jessica Harrington, Weather Watch, a dual code six-year-old gelding. Weather Watch’s first outing for the club saw him win in Tipperary and be a fast-finishing second in Listowel. He is due to race at the Currgah today.

National Stud art

AN exhibtion running currently at the Irish National Stud in Kildare is in aid of the Irish Horse Welfare Trust, featuring Siobahn Bulfin, Tony O’Connor, Peter Curling, John Jobson and Marina Hamilton among other well-known equine artists. It ends on Sunday.
