A MAZING result for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute which, together with Galway Racecourse, has announced that its Race in Pink fundraising day at Ballybrit on Sunday, October 27th, along with the Win a BMW car raffle on the day, raised a staggering €150,997 for the charity.

What a wonderful finale for all involved in this, the second year of the event at Galway Racecourse.

The National Breast Cancer Research Institute raises funds in support of the breast cancer research team lead by Professor Michael Kerin based at the Lambe Institute, NUI Galway. The support of local and national business and the huge amount of people who came to the event ensured this was one of the most successful fundraising events.

Michael Moloney, manager of Galway Racecourse said: “The day was hugely supported by businesses and hundreds of guests that supported the hospitality lunch. People came from all over Ireland came. By partnering with the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, we are supporting a research team who are successfully working on improving breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Well done to all involved, a great way to end the racing year for us too here at Galway Racecourse.”

The BMW car raffle saw tickets in huge demand at just €20. Philip Duffy, director of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute said: “When we came up with the idea of raffling off a BMW we were a little apprehensive as it was our first big raffle to raise funds for Breast Cancer Research. However, it was a huge hit. We can’t thank everybody enough for their enormous generosity and support.”

  • Dogs get off the couch and hit the Curragh

THIS year is the 11th annual Curragh Dog Walk which takes place on Sunday, December 29th at noon. The walk will raise funds for the Kildare Animal Foundation, based just outside Kildare town. Donations will be collected on the day from participants.

Each year the Curragh Dog Walk attracts hundreds of walkers with their many different types of dogs, many of them rescued dogs. The walk is approximately three miles but there are options for shortcuts. All dogs must be kept on lead during the walk.

Everyone starts out at noon from the trainers’ car park situated opposite the Curragh Racecourse and in front of TRI Equestrian Superstore. The walkers will proceed down the tunnel, crossing under the road and then out onto road that runs alongside the Old Vic gallop.

Kildare Animal Foundation has been in existence for over 20 years and has recently established a Wildlife Centre that rescues and releases injured and orphaned wildlife. Contact Áine Corcoran on 085 7117271.
