AINTREE should have been everyone’s focus today but it is possible that some good can come out of a bad situation with your help as racing fans are being asked to divert a small bit of Aintree cash to an extremely good cause.

Dan Donogher from Ballybrittas, Co Laois, celebrated his first birthday last Saturday. He is not certain to see his second birthday, due to a rare genetic disease. His parents Niall and Sarah are hoping to raise €2 million to fund treatment which can only be given in the USA. Already they have passed the €500,000 mark.

Family friend James Fitzpatrick from Timahoe explained: “A group of 10 of us go to Aintree every year, so we have some money to spare this year and we are giving it to Dan. Maybe Aintree regulars might like to chip in, and those who normally have a bet on the race might bet a fiver on Dan instead.”

We know that The Irish Field readers will do what they can.
