THAT Youghal man Davy Russell is everywhere and he has now been chosen as the latest Cork Person of the Month.

Davy, thankfully not badly hurt from a recent fall, had a tremendous year in the saddle, winning the Grand National, being leading jockey at Cheltenham and becoming champion jockey in Ireland for the third time.

Michael O’Brien of Bishopstown and District Lions Club, who nominated Davy for this award, explained that people may not realise how much he does for charity: “Davy has helped me organise many family fun days and donkey derby fundraisers for our Aras Leon Residential Centre here in Bishopstown. Of course, with trainer Jim Bolger, he has also raised huge money to fund the Irish Cancer Society’s research projects.’’

Davy said: “I’m delighted to receive this recognition from my own county and I’d like to thank everybody, especially from my own place Youghal, for all their support, not only this year but over past years.”

Davy’s name now goes forward, with the other Persons of the Month chosen this year, for possible selection as Cork Person of the Year at a Gala Awards Lunch on January 18th next at the Rochestown Park Hotel, Cork.
