THE newly appointed captain of the Dublin Journalists Golf Society - racing broadcaster Denis Kirwan of Touchline/Meridian Media - had the first outing of his 2018 captaincy at the Laytown and Bettystown links this week. It was won in impressive fashion by Conor O’Hehir, who is a member of RTÉ’s racing production team. Conor fired in a superb two over par round of 73 - 38 stableford points off a 4 handicap.

He is the son of racing journalist Peter O’Hehir and one of the many talented young members of Naas Golf Club.

Tierney to Everest

WEATHER permitting, jockeys’ agent Ruaidhrí Tierney will trek to Mount Everest base camp on a 14-day trek. Base camp is located 17,600 feet above sea level and is the last port of call for those aiming for the summit. Ruaidhrí leaves this week flying to Kathmandu then on to Lukla, where the trek will begin. There is always a concern regarding altitude sickness at this level but he’s hoping to escape this and reach base camp.

Ruaidhrí will be doing this tortuous climb in aid of Irish Injured Jockeys.

All monies raised will go directly to the IIJF. You can donate by clicking on the Go Fund Me Page on his Twitter Page - @ruaidhritierney.
