Jim Balfy - Supreme horse racing club

The blue and white silks of the Supreme Horse Racing Club are well known by now. Manager Jim Balfry answers questions below

Why is it a good time to have a horse in training in Ireland?

The economy has a major impact on the playing field. However, I think that if the level of racing is good enough people are also more likely to invest.

Are there better opportunities on the flat or over jumps in your opinion?

For the ordinary racing man, jumping would have a better opportunity of getting a winner. Flat is way more competitive in my opinion.

What is the typical investment needed to join your club or syndicate?

If you join Supreme Horse Racing we offer many different packages. For as little as €140 a month you can become a member.

What do members get in return?

Supreme Horse Racing has up on 500-600 members with about 40 horses. Depending on which package you opt for, there are many perks of joining with us. This includes putting the syndicates’ horse in training with the top people in the business such as trainer Willie Mullins. We like to keep our members informed and up to date and we also offer stable tours and visits to Willie Mullins’ yard which allows for the members to see first-hand where there money is being spent.

What is the biggest turnoff for potential owners in Ireland?

Injuries are probably one of the biggest turnoff for potential owners. If a horse becomes injured there are still costs to curtail.

The horse will still need food and vets fees to be paid. Then there is the issue that there may be no guarantee of the horse returning to the track.
