1:40 Navan Members Maiden Hurdle (Div I) 2m

This is likely to develop into a match between Coqolino and El Barra, and the former can come out on top. The Denise Foster-trained gelding made a bright start to his hurdles career when chasing home Lieutenant Command at Galway in October but his progress stalled when he fell at Punchestown next time. He was 98 days off the track when returning to run very well over this course and distance only three weeks ago; the horse that beat him, Alko Rouge, is in the Grade 3 Kingsfurze Hurdle at Naas tomorrow. With the benefit of that run, he could be tough to beat today.

El Barra has been a bit disappointing over hurdles but he did improve considerably between his first start and when fourth at Naas last time and any drying in the ground could well be a help to him.

SELECTION: COQOLINO

Next best: El Barra

2:1o Navan Members Maiden Hurdle (Div II) 2m

This looks weaker than the first division so Butterflyvespiere may be able to get off the mark on just her second start. The Peter Fahey-trained mare ran admirably when a 66/1 fourth to Magic Tricks on her debut over this course and distance. She got a little bit outpaced as the field moved into the straight that day but made late gains and given time since that run, an improved effort seems likely.

Hallowed Star has put in two very good efforts in good maidens: he was fifth to Wide Receiver at Leopardstown on St Stephen’s Day and second to Decimation at Down Royal last month. He has the scope to improve again.

2:45 Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Hurdle 2m

Djasek could be the answer to this competitive handicap hurdle. Tony Martin’s five-year-old is one of the least exposed runners in this race and comes into this off two good efforts, first when second to Flindt at Fairyhouse and then when a close fourth to Fou Diligence at Naas last month. Wait Here was only just ahead of him that day and the reopposes. It was a good effort from Augustine O’Leary’s horse at Naas considering he was coming off a lay off but Djasek might be able to improve past him now given the contrast in both profiles. Wait Here is having his 24th start.

The admirably consistent Jiving Jerry shouldn’t be discounted. He hasn’t been out of the first three in six starts and bids for his third win of the season today. His form to finish second to Make Good has worked out well, while his most recent Fairyhouse third to King Alex is also a good standard.

SELECTION: DJASEK

Indiana Jones looked a nice horse when he won at Cork earlier in the season, clocking a good time, and he has a nice opportunity to get back on the board. Disappointing on his next start after that win, Mouse Morris’s bounced back with an excellent effort to be third to Grand Roi in the Grade 2 Grand Thornton Hurdle at Limerick over Christmas. The form of that race looks strong as even the fourth home, Lunar Display, has gone on to run well in a Grade 3.

Course winner Gars De Sceaux is very much a chaser in the making but he showed a good attitude when battling back to win last time and the step up in trip will suit. Velvet Elvis has to be considered as well coming here on a hat-trick for the in-form Tom Gibney yard.

SELECTION: INDIANA JONES

Next best: Gars De Sceaux

3:55 Webster Cup Chase (Grade 2) 2m

Given his two wins have come in big field handicap chases this season, the suspicion is that Daly Tiger may need the aspects of that sort of contest to be at his best, but he still holds a big chance here again at the weights. Despite receiving 9lbs from Cilaos Emery at Naas, he was no match for that rival over this distance. However his main rival today, Castlegrace Paddy, has to concede him 5lbs, and in all is 10lbs wrong at the weights with the Noel Meade runner, who can continue what has been a fine season.

Pat Fahy’s loyal servant couldn’t keep up with Bachasson when trying a new trip in the two-and-a-half-mile Red Mills Chase last time but back at this course and distance where he is two out of two in Grade 2 chases, including taking this contest last season, he should fare better.

SELECTION: DALY TIGER

It’s hard to get away from School Boy Hours who undoubtedly looks well handicapped off a mark of 135. A second-season novice chaser, he has some very nice form this term, particularly over staying trips; he was second to Latest Exhibtion on his seasonal debut at Punchestown and on his penultimate start he was only three lengths away from the now 151-rated Eklat De Rire. Fourth in a good two-and-a-half-mile chase at Naas last time, coming up to this trip will suit him and it’s no surprise he is the pick of Mark Walsh among J.P.’s trio.

Spades Are Trumps, another in the green and gold hoops, caught the eye with his run behind Atlantic Shore, whom he opposes again at Punchestown last time out. On his first start over three-mile plus trip over fences, he got hampered twice by fallers but still kept on well to be a close fifth. He is 8lbs lower over fences than his hurdles assessment and with just seven runs in the former discipline, he has the scope to improve further. Stormy Judge, Enjoy D’Allen and Atlantic Shore all come here in good form and should not be discounted.

SELECTION: SCHOOL BOY HOURS

5:05 Proudstown Handicap Chase 2m 1f

In a weak contest, it might be worth taking a chance on Batcio improving enough from his seasonal debut to take advantage. The Ted Walsh-trained nine-year-old has some smart form over fences, including a close second to Drumconnor Lad in the two-mile handicap chase on Leopardstown’s St Stephen’s Day card last season. He was well held at Naas on his first run in 318 days but he was weak in the betting beforehand and any positive market moves today would be significant.

Conright Boy disappointed over the hurdles the last day but he has good recent form over fences. Stoughan Cross won off a 271-day break at this course in December and he was going ookay until he took a fall at Fairyhouse last time. He could have a say for the in-form Tom Gibney team.

SELECTION: BATCIO

Next best: Stoughan Cross

Grady Hollow may be all the rage for this after finishing second in a Limerick bumper that has worked out particularly well but in a line through the Oliver McKiernan runner Meet And Greet, Mylestown Upper shouldn’t be far away from him and may be underrated. The Denise Foster-trained son of Balko hit the front with three furlongs to go but couldn’t see it out on his racecourse debut. He should strip fitter and show benefit from the experience today.

The Robcour-owned Grady Hollow was second to Holymacapony in a Kirkistown point before getting off the mark at Castletown Geoghegan. His track debut was promising given he finished ahead of Noble Yeats and he is entitled to progress again. Apollo Ten, Arthur Moore’s debutant, is a nicely bred son of Sea The Moon and could be worth keeping an eye on.

SELECTION: MYLESTOWN UPPER
