2.00 What Odds Paddy? Chase (Grade 3) 2m

Cilaos Emery, who was good enough to finish fourth in last season’s Champion Hurdle, can take this opener. He didn’t jump that well when chasing home Bachasson in the Clonmel Oil Chase on his only previous start this season and he fell on his previous outing over fences just under 13 months ago.

However, he is also capable of high-class form over fences as he showed when making short work of Ballyoisin in a Grade 2 at Cork last season. He has to give 9lbs to Daly Tiger, who is rated only 6lbs behind him, but he looks equal to the task at hand.

Daly Tiger is an intriguing opponent and he has enjoyed quite a season already as he landed a very valuable handicap chase at Punchestown in November and he picked up another big pot when bolting up in last month’s two-mile Dan & Joan Moore Chase at Fairyhouse. Those efforts in quality handicaps would suggest that graded race victories are well within his reach.

SELECTION: CILAOS EMERY

This is good opportunity for School Boy Hours. In his six beginners’ chase outings he has run to a good level and his second to Latest Exhibition at Punchestown in October coupled with a runner-up finish behind Eklat De Rire over an extended three miles a couple of months ago suggest that he could be difficult to beat. He should cope with this shorter trip and a repeat of his best chasing form should suffice.

He may have most to fear from another unexposed chaser in Defi Bleu who was placed behind Blackbow over two miles earlier in the season and also showed up quite well over three miles at Navan last time when he was fourth to Mr Hendricks.

The form of that Navan race received a boost when the third-placed The Big Dog went on to win the Grand National Trial at Punchestown. Enjoy d’Allen commands the utmost respect but two recent wins have earned him a 17lbs hike in the weights.

Jesse Evans has a better chance than his recent form figures imply. This Gowran maiden winner finished seventh to Appreciate It in a Leopardstown Grade 1 at Christmas but faced a very stiff task on only his second completed start over hurdles. A number of horses who were well beaten in that race have since run well in decent company and the two that finished behind Jesse Evans at Leopardstown were previous graded winners. That level of form would suggest that he can play a leading role in a race such as this and he can deal with the enthusiastic Echoes In Rain.

The latter bolted up in a maiden hurdle here in December and again showed up well from the front before eventually having to settle for fourth behind Dreal Deal in a Grade 2 at Punchestown last month.

Toughari looks to have a solid chance on his last couple of runs. His second to Peckham Springs at Fairyhouse a couple of months ago was a solid effort and he again showed up well when sixth to Coltor in a maiden hurdle here last month when he was only beaten five lengths.

He has just over four lengths to make up on Zoffanien but he is now getting weight from that rival. That weight concession is largely offset by Hugh Morgan’s 5lbs claim.

Even though he has to carry top weight, Zoffanien must have every chance as he is a reliable type who has been placed on four of his five runs over hurdles and appeared to run right up to his best when chasing home Druid’s Altar here last time.

SELECTION: TOUGHARI

Next best: Zoffanien

The sparingly campaigned Egality Mans could be the one. He has been off the track for over a year but that is of no concern for a horse coming from the Willie Mullins yard and he has shown a reasonable level of ability on his two outings on the track.

The second of these yielded a second to the very useful Assemble in a maiden hurdle at Limerick in December 2019 and he may not need to improve on that to succeed.

He may have most to fear from another rival looking to defy a lengthy break. The French import Pont Du Gard has been off the track slightly longer than Egality Mans having not been seen since reaching the frame on his jumping debut in France in November 2019.

He showed promise that day and should be up to winning a maiden hurdle. Fourneux d’Isanka has shown up well on his three bumper outings so far and could run well on his hurdling debut.

SELECTION: EGALITY MANS

Micro Manage has a good opportunity to get off the mark over hurdles at the second attempt. This classy flat performer, who was rated 107 when contesting the Irish St Leger on his most recent start on the level, made a satisfactory jumping debut at Leopardstown over Christmas when he was third in a maiden won by Get My Drift.

He possibly did a little too much from the front that day but he still showed up well and indicated that he should have no trouble making his mark in this sphere.

He is chosen ahead of the 124-rated Great Bear who has some decent form to his name, such as when second to Magic Tricks at Navan a few months ago, and should appreciate dropping down from Grade 1 level at the Dublin Racing Festival where he finished down the field behind Appreciate It.

Genois is another likely contender having been placed on both his starts to date.

The unfortunate Aarons Day was one of those horses impact by the shambolic start in a handicap hurdle here last month yet he somehow managed to finish second which represented a huge effort on his part.

Admittedly he has gone up 4lbs in the weights for that display but that comeback effort suggested there was a good prize in him and he can repeat last year’s win in this race even though he is 13lbs higher this time around.

Spruced Up looked a progressive mare around this time last season when her form included a fourth in the mares handicap hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival. She hasn’t built on that and her last couple of runs have been poor but she had a legitimate excuse for her most recent effort and could be worth another chance.

Gerri Colombe looked an exciting prospect when he made a winning debut in a Fairyhouse bumper last month. On that occasion the former winning pointer stretched right away from his rivals over the last couple of furlongs to win by 24l and it was encouraging to note that the third-placed runner was second in a bumper at the start of this week.

A winners’ bumper should be well within the grasp of the Gordon Elliott inmate and he can deal with Highland Charge who looked a horse with a lovely future when he defeated the ill-fated Reality Cheque in a Fairyhouse bumper a couple of months ago.
