IT was very much a mixed week for Co Donegal jockeys with Dylan Browne McMonagle, who rode a winner at Navan last Thursday week, then self-isolating following positive Covid-19 results for two of his housemates while others were racking up wins both here and in Britain.
The highlight victory was, of course, that of Oisin Orr in the Group 1 Comer Group International Irish St Leger at the Curragh last Sunday on the Moyglare Stud Farm-owned and -bred Search For A Song.
The four-year-old Galileo filly, who won the same mile and six classic last year under Chris Hayes, was given a brilliant ride by 23-year-old Orr who produced the Dermot Weld-trained chesnut late to beat the always-prominent British raider Fujaira Prince by two lengths.
On Monday evening, Orr rode a winner at Tipperary where, the following afternoon, he recorded a double as did fellow Rathmullan native Luke McAteer who scored again on Thursday in Naas.
From last Thursday evening to Monday evening, Trentagh’s Martin Harley partnered seven winners for a variety of trainers, commencing the time period with a treble at Chelmsford.
Flat success
On the level, there were also single wins for Co Antrim’s Sam Ewing on Friday at Limerick – where his mount, the Charles Byrnes-trained even-money favourite, Poseidon, accounted for Ronan McNally’s The Jam Man (18/1) by three-parts of a length – and for Co Down’s Patsy Cosgrave at Yarmouth on Tuesday.
There have been leaner pickings for the jump jockeys. Downpatrick’s Danny McMenamin rode his sixth winner of the campaign at Hexham on Tuesday, while the reigning champion, Brian Hughes, recorded his 28th success of the season at Kelso on Wednesday. He is five ahead of Paddy Brennan who rode a double on the same card.
