DOWNPATRICK-born jockey Danny McMenamin recorded a double at Sedgefield last Thursday week, the first coming in the two-mile, five-furlong novices’ handicap chase on Lovely Schtuff who is trained way up in Aberdeenshire by Jackie Stephen.

The eight-year-old Court Cave gelding, who was winning for the first time in his career, was bred in Co Louth by Thomas McGeough out of an unraced Phardante mare, The Long Bill. She is dam of two other winners including the 2011 September Storm gelding Mister Mister.

Brian Hughes also rode a winner at that Sedgefield meeting and had a double at Perth on Sunday which brought his seasonal total up to 23.

There were wins over jumps too at Wexford on Saturday for Simon Torrens and Noel McParlan, the latter joining forces with his owner/trainer father Sean to land the three-mile, one-furlong handicap chase with the French-bred Deadheat, a half-brother to the Grade 1 winner Great Field (by Great Pretender). The seven-year-old bay was having his second racecourse start both for the McParlans and in Ireland. He had finished third at Killarney nine days earlier.

Out of luck at Down Royal, Donegal’s Conor Orr partnered the Dot Love-trained Bridge Native to win the two-mile, two-furlong handicap chase on Monday at Downpatrick where the Michael Millar-trained 125/1 shot Deo Bellator, was another out of luck in the bumper where she finished second. The seven-year-old Getaway mare was ridden by Aileen O’Sullivan, joint-owner along with Neil Gault.
