AS the only licensed public trainer in Co Derry, Noel Kelly was sure to attract a big crowd to his first open day but even he was more than surprised when “170 adults and a load of wee ones” turned up at his Draperstown yard last Sunday.

People came to inspect the facilities and see some of his horses working over hurdles and fences. They also got to meet the yard’s farrier and other staff members, while Grand National-winning jockey Derek Fox was among those interviewed during the afternoon.

“I couldn’t believe how many people turned up,” said Noel. “Luckily we had a large hog roast so hopefully everyone got something to eat!” Pony rides kept many of the younger visitors occupied while the adults strolled around the stables and paddocks.
