THERE was a great mixed double for Northern-bred horses in Britain last weekend with Best Solution landing the Group 3 Dubai 100 Autumn Stakes for two-year-olds at Newmarket on Saturday and, the following afternoon, Double Ross winning the veterans’ handicap chase at Chepstow.

Trained for Godolphin by Saeed bin Suroor and ridden by William Carson, Best Solution, who won his maiden on his second start at Goodwood in July, is a son of Kodiac and the second of three recorded foals out of the Kingmambo mare Al Andalyya.

From the family of the Park Hill Stakes winner Eva Luna, dam of, among others, Brian Boru and Sea Moon and grandam of Workforce, Best Solution was bred by Cecil and Martin McCracken. They purchased Al Andalyya as a four-year-old at Tattersalls Newmarket in February 2012.

The Double Eclipse gelding Double Ross was one of six 10-year-olds in Sunday’s eight-strong veterans’ chase at Chepstow. Trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, the chestnut was recording his sixth career success and his first since landing a Grade 3 chase at Cheltenham in January 2014.

Double Ross was bred by Tom McIlhagga out of the Nearly A Hand mare Kinross, dam also of the seven-time winner Mr Moonshine, who is also by Double Eclipse.
