IT’s been quiet on the local racehorse to riding horse scene recently but the Neil Morrison-partnered Just For Gerry jumped clear at Castlewellan to qualify for the Horserail All-Ireland thoroughbred horse working hunter series final at Iverk Show late next month.

Owned by Ros Allen, the seven-year-old Definite Article gelding pulled up in his two point-to-points last autumn but seems to be enjoining his second career more and has competed in three novice classes under Eventing Ireland rules and is due to start in another today at Tullylish.

Just For Gerry was bred by Fiona McStay out of the King’s Theatre mare Whats Another One, dam also of the three-time winning Gamut gelding Okotoks.

Morrison qualified the bay for the ITM open racehorse to riding horse final, which also takes place at Iverk, when winning the open class (part of the Down Royal league) at Saintfield show’s new grounds at Glenbrook Farm last Saturday.

Just For Gerry had a busy day on Saturday as he also competed in the retraining class (an ITM qualifier), won by Sarah Dynes on the British-bred Omars Day, a 15-year-old gelding by Bertolini.

Third there, as he was in the day’s Horserail qualifier, was Goingagainstmywill who only moved north from Limerick 11 weeks earlier. The nine-year-old Golan gelding, who never finished in the first three in 12 starts, is now being ridden and produced by Malachy Casement who rode one winner in his 21-race point-to-point career.

Also qualifying for the working hunter final at Iverk were the Canadian-bred Nanaimo, a 10-year-old Philanthropist gelding who won three times on the all-weather and is now eventing with Rachel Ferres, and Michelle McConnell’s unraced Sunday Morning, an unraced 13-year-old Winged Love gelding who was bred by the late Tommy Steele.
