THE first of a three-part documentary series on the ups and downs in the lives of students attending the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) was screened on BBC One Northern Ireland on Wednesday night.

Countryside College featured the Loughry and Greenmount Campuses as well as Enniskillen where the segments centred on second year equine management student Luke Norton from Co Longford as he, and others, prepared both thoroughbreds and sport horses for the foal sales.

The series, which is narrated by Co Tyrone actor Fra Fee, continues next Wednesday, September 2nd, at 10.45pm.

Northern trainers on the scoreboard

WE’RE going to mention northern trainers and owners this week who recently had winners. Last Friday at Kilbeggan, the Rose Boyd-owned, well-related Flemensfirth mare Fleming’s Dream justified 5/2 favouritism in a maiden hurdle. At Killarney the following afternoon, Noel McParlan partnered the Noel Kelly-trained, John Devine-owned Décor Irlandais to victory in a handicap hurdle. At Naas, Noel Meade saddled Patricia Hunt’s Layfayette to win while, on Tuesday at Bellewstown, Banbridge trainer Sarah Dawson sent Magic Sea to win for a trio of loyal owners.
