O’Reilly can make a successful start to his season. On his only run last season this colt shaped with a good deal of promise when finishing a four-length second to the promising Bolshoi Ballet in a one-mile maiden at this track in October. That run suggested that he will have no trouble making his mark at this level and he is chosen in the belief that he can overcome a 177-day absence.

Corps Des Pages is a fascinating newcomer as a son of Frankel out of a Group 3-winning sprinter who hails from a terrific family. Furthermore, his yard has made a bright start to the season. Hms Seahorse can be expected to improve off his comeback run at Navan.

This could see Monaasib make a winning return to the fray. This colt emerged as a high-class juvenile last term when he was just touched off in a very valuable sales race at Naas and he signed off with an excellent three-quarter-length second to High Definition in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes.

The drop back to seven furlongs will be no problem for him and he can deal with the threat posed by the intriguing Poetic Flare. The latter was set a stiff task when contesting the Dewhurst Stakes on just his second outing but he bounced back from that unplaced effort to win the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes a week later.

The Anglesey Stakes winner A Case Of You returned with a victory at Dundalk last month and that recent outing coupled with his rating of 108 makes him a formidable candidate provided this trip proves to be within his reach.

Loch Lein is well drawn and looked a potentially high-class filly last season. She could be worth taking a chance on. She tried this trip on her debut last year and looked as though she might benefit from dropping back to six furlongs, but as she matures from two to three this distance could easily be within her reach. On her second start she showed good form to chase home St Mark’s Basilica at the Curragh and then she was an impressive winner over six furlongs on quick ground at Cork in September when she had five subsequent winners behind her.

Loch Lein is preferred to the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes winner Shale who won the Silver Flash Stakes at this track last season. She will not find this easy under a Group 1 penalty. Empress Josephine and Joan Of Arc are both respected as they look to build on recent maiden wins, while Mehnah looked a very nice prospect when she made a winning debut at Dundalk last autumn.

SELECTION: LOCH LEIN

He faces another stiff task off top weight but Wonder Elzaam produced a terrific effort at Naas a fortnight ago to shoulder 10st 4lb to victory in a competitive handicap over this trip. He has to contend with much different ground and a career-high mark of 100, but in terms of the ground he has shown a liking for a sound surface by running well at Dundalk on a number of occasions. Furthermore, his revised mark will make life tough but the calibre of his Naas effort suggested that he could be stakes class.

He will have most to fear from Real Appeal who lacks the advantage of a previous run this season but was only beaten a length and a quarter over this course and distance in an Irish Champions Weekend handicap last September. Leadership Race comes here off a respectable second to Alhaazm at Dundalk last month and he too warrants consideration.

3.45 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes (Group 3) 1m 2f

Bolshoi Ballet looked a major talent when running out an impressive winner of a maiden at this track last autumn. He then disappointed when stepped up to Group 1 level at France but he is easily forgiven that below-par effort as it came just eight days after his maiden and the race was also run on decidedly testing ground.

He can see off the equally promising Taipan who looked a colt of some potential when coming from well off the pace to win a one-mile Naas maiden on heavy ground on his debut last November. Fernando Vichi wasn’t disgraced in a Group 2 here last time out having previously landed a one-mile maiden at this track. He looks a nice type.

Another to keep in mind is Lough Derg who looked as though he could improve a good deal from his winning Dundalk debut last November when he accounted for five subsequent winners.

He has to contend with top weight, but Zozimus might be the answer. The Dundalk maiden winner struggled to make an impression in a one-mile listed race at that track last month but did much better at Cork last weekend when he switched to handicap company over this trip and was beaten one length into third by Aesop.

That represented a decent effort against older opposition and back against his own age group he can deal with Sir Lamorak who picked up well off a steady pace to win a 10-furlong Dundalk maiden a couple of weeks ago.

Irwin is a colt of potential, while Ides Of August is a course winner and might do better back at this level having contested three stakes races last season.

Koybig is a hopeful choice in a race where there isn’t much recent form to go on. This gelding hasn’t won a race for two years but he does at least arrive here in reasonable heart having posted a series of solid efforts at Dundalk this year, the pick of which could be his half-length second to Howyoulikethat two months ago.

Breaking News was well beaten on her reappearance at Navan but shaped better at Gowran during the week and might progress again with her rider’s 5lb claim another positive for her chances.

Porter Rockwell is no more than a hopeful choice. He struggled to make an impact in four runs last season but he could easily better that form.

The fact that he hasn’t run since struggling on his handicap debut last July isn’t a major concern as his yard is more than capable of producing horses to run well off such a layoff. In addition, he is well drawn and has dropped 6lbs in the ratings since that initial handicap outing.

He is preferred to Fugacious who began his season with an encouraging second to Starting Monday in a Curragh handicap three weeks ago.
