IT has now been a couple of weeks since I, alongside Will Forsyth-Forrest, beat the World Record for the fastest time to ride a unicycle 400 miles. We went from Mizen Head, Co Cork to Malin Head, Co Donegal to raise much needed funds for the Irish Injured Jockeys.
Despite the 10 days and two hours feeling incredibly long at times, we look back on what was a brilliant trip full of both generous and hilarious characters. Taking on the challenge as two students from Dublin, we were so well looked after from the bottom of Ireland to the top.
Whether it was an overtaking car thrusting a note out of their window to us, strangers bringing out trays of coffee, or pub-goers putting a pint behind the bar at the end of a day, we were treated to the very best of Irish generosity and humour.
Through shortcuts gone wrong, numerous rolls of Vet Wrap, and toys chucked out the pram here and there, we kept spirits high and had a great laugh. We may not have attracted the Forrest Gump-esque entourage that we had imagined beforehand, but it was great to be joined one day by James Twomey on his unicycle who set the original one-wheel record of 12 days and eight hours.
We also enjoyed a couple of racecourse visits to Limerick and Leopardstown, meeting jockeys who were extremely supportive of the cause. I am not sure Donnacha O’Brien would be thanking us however for persuading him to swap four legs for one wheel, damaging his wedding tackle in the process, just before heading out for his 2:20 race.
When Will was asked what the best part of the trip was, he said: “finishing it.” That may have sounded a touch gloomy, but there really was a fantastic crowd up at Malin Head. Despite their views of the Donegal coastline being ruined by two sweaty boys, who by then were unicycling like Quasimodo, the local crowd made some great noise during the final climb, complete with cow bells. Handshakes done and it was to the Seaview Bar with family and friends alike for a creamy pint of Guinness and a steak that will last long in the memory.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone that has already supported us in what was a hugely enjoyable couple of weeks, and more importantly we raised lots of money for the Irish Injured Jockeys; a brilliant charity which received so much praise up and down the country from all walks of life.
We really appreciate all donations and are getting close to reaching our target of €20,000 which can be achieved by searching for ‘Unicycles,’ at everydayhero.ie
Many thanks!
