7:15 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas (Group 1) 1m

Albigna: Star juvenile filly last year when she achieved significantly more than any of her 14 rivals today, most notably an authoritative success in Group 1 Marcel Boussac. Arguably enhanced her profile further despite only finishing fourth in Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf – tapped for toe early, last into the straight, but finished really fast. That proved she can handle a quick surface and back at this more conventional track, she is the one to beat.

Apricot Moon: Won Dundalk maiden in December but that is her only appearance. Thrown into the deep end now.

Brook On Fifth: Won first time up in 29-runner maiden at the Curragh in August but struggled to really compete in two Group 3s after.

Even So: Camelot filly improved from debut third to win what looked a good Gowran maiden impressively on soft ground in September. Already seen this season, having ran a slightly disappointing third behind stablemate Lemista in the Park Express Stakes. Can improve from that although it’s a negative Colin Keane has looked elsewhere.

Fancy Blue: Deep Impact filly represented Donnacha O’Brien in all but name last season, showing likeable attitude to win both of her starts. That said, the bare form suggests she has a bit to do and she needed every single yard of her course-and-distance win in the Staffordstown Stakes so may well need further now.

Katiba: Off the mark in a late September course-and-distance maiden before finishing third to Stella Star in Group 3 Killavullan Stakes at Leopardstown. Promising filly but tough task here.

Miss Myers: Leaped forward from what she achieved last year when 100/1 fourth in Park Express at Naas in March. That scuppered any ideas of going a handicap route and tough race now to confirm that run was no fluke.

My Lucky Penny: 0-4 and well held for each start. Out of her league on what we’ve seen so far.

New York Girl: New Approach filly took huge leap forward from debut fourth in Cork maiden to win Group 3 Weld Park Stakes, nabbing A New Dawn on the line. The way she stayed on there suggests she wants a mile at least and could surprise a few.

Peaceful: Seven-length Thurles maiden winner in October before finishing second to newcomer Born With Pride in Newmarket listed contest. Had attracted market support for Newmarket’s Guineas last week before defecting and has again been popular in the betting this week so vibes from in-form Ballydoyle team must be strong. That said, she ultimately looks a short price on what she has achieved.

Ridenza: Caught a lot of eyes when smooth winner of Leopardstown maiden last August but injury cut short her campaign. A daughter of Sea The Stars and owner’s smart Raydara, she remains an exciting prospect but starting off here, coming off that injury, will be difficult.

Roca Roma: Supported at big prices this week despite just sole second in a Leopardstown maiden on her form book. Rather significant that Colin Keane rides her instead of stable’s Even So or Soul Search, so must be showing a lot at home, but surely has too much to do in a race of this calibre.

So Wonderful: Maiden after eight starts last season but brings with her a strong book of form, including a third to Love in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. Can never discount a well bred Ballydoyle filly like her improving as a three-year-old so no surprise to see her heavily involved again, but suspicion is she may need further now; her dam is an Oaks runner-up.

Soul Search: Another maiden with very strong form, having gone down by two lengths to Love in the Moyglare and earlier less than a length away from Alpine Star in the Debutante. That she couldn’t get off the mark in Fairyhouse listed race in September was disappointing but a return to better ground and coming up to this trip could suit her well.

Valeria Messalina: Put experience of a barrier trial ‘win’ to good use win showing good attitude to see off Now The King in Naas maiden. Then stepped forward significantly when closing in second to Rose Of Kildare in Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket. Part of a golden generation of fillies for her trainer so can’t be ignored and has the attitude to get herself involved today.

Conclusion

This doesn’t look to be the strongest renewal and for that reason it’s hard to look beyond Albigna, easily the best of these last year. New York Girl and Valeria Messalina appeal most of the unexposed fillies to give the favourite most to do.
