2:45 Kenny Galway Handicap 1m½f

Sin E Shekells seemed to find his level on his previous run when finishing a creditable third to Shona Mea at Leopardstown.

That was his handicap debut and came over just a half furlong shorter trip than today’s, and on this just his sixth ever start, he has the scope to defy a 4lb higher rating.

Both Ya Ya Baby and Cobb And Co have similar profiles, lightly raced and progressive with two runner-up finishes on both of their previous starts. They should run well again, but the second vote goes to Take My Hand. Michael Mulvany’s filly has shown a good level on each of her runs this season and took another step forward at Gowran last time.

Fourhometwo ran with real credit on his debut at Gowran Park and can win now. Johnny Murtagh’s colt was slowly away but got his act together through the race and gave a real fright to Southern Cape, Donnacha O’Brien’s 1/4 favourite who had the benefit of a run beforehand. With that run under his belt, the son of Ajaya can improve and ought to be tough to beat.

Dame Dandy has gone well on both of her starts, first at Naas when second and then when fourth at the Curragh.

She can put that experience to good use but hasn’t been done any favours drawn in 13.

Eastern Racer and Mulzamm, winners already this week, haven’t been done great favours by the draw and don’t appear to be well treated, the former reassessed and the latter off a 6lb penalty. In contrast, Darkened, who finished second over course and distance on Friday night is 4lbs well in and drawn in six. His effort deserves marking up also because he came from stall 13 and had to race wide all the way so everything looks in place for a big run today.

The Mpex Kid ran fourth here on Monday, and should be better for that experience. He is still lightly raced and has drawn five so can go well.

Njord, unlucky here on Tuesday night, can gain compensation in tomorrow’s feature. It was a huge effort from the four-year-old who had to race wide all the way having come from stall 18, yet he had everything well held bar Saltonstall. That performance earned him a 6lb raise from the handicapper but he can race off his old mark today and significantly he has been drawn in stall seven so should have a smoother trip.

Magnetic North and On A Session both ran well here on Tuesday but there is no real reason either should turn the form around with Njord. Laugh A Minute has to shoulder top weight but has a nice draw and could be well suited to this sort of test. He has gone well on all three of his runs for Ado McGuinness and was previously rated a lot higher in Britain.

La Joya could be the answer to what probably won’t be the best maiden run here this week.

The Ballylinch Stud filly wasn’t unfancied to make a winning debut at Fairyhouse but ran a creditable fifth in the end. She is stepping up to a mile and a half today and with the benefit of that experience, could prove difficult to beat.

Prose has the rating to win this comfortably but has been well held in four maidens already this season. She should run well again but it might be worth taking a chance on the Jessica Harrington newcomer Golddragon Reef, a Zhang Yuesheng-owned daughter of Fastnet Rock.

This is an intriguing race and a case can be made at least five of the six runners. Slight preference is for Camphor, who will receive weight from all of her rivals.

She is rock solid off a rating of 96, having run to that level for her last seven starts. She was well held in a Group 2 on her latest run but this is a step down and significantly, she has good Galway form.

Buildmeupbuttercup is the best-rated horse in the race following some excellent performances on the flat last term but she just doesn’t convince with her finishing effort. Powerful Ted got no run at Leopardstown last time and is now on better terms with his conqueror Tandem.

A strong case can be made for many of these who have been mixing it between hurdles and the flat but Dawn Over Owning could have the most upside.

He isn’t bred for this sort of trip but it has taken the longer distances to get the best out of him, having shown improved form to chase home the well handicapped Red Kelly at Leopardstown over 10 furlongs and then needing every yard of the mile-and-six-furlong trip at Killarney when winning last time out.

He has the scope to improve again and although drawn out in 19, his jockey Leigh Roche rides this course very well and can get him organised from there.

There are any amount of dangers but Alabaster caught the eye as a potentially well-treated horse. His second to stablemate Bua Boy over hurdles here on Thursday was improved form and he may be able to take advantage of a mark of 70 back on the level.
