FORTY minutes after his win with Recoletos, Carlos Laffon-Parias had two of the seven runners in the Prix des Chenes: Insandi and Shaman.

Both ran very well to grab second and third without ever really threatening the all-the-way winner, Anodor, who is trained by Freddy Head, the uncle of Laffon-Parias’s wife, Patricia.

Now unbeaten in two starts, Anodor could be very good as the two colts he beat convincingly on his Deauville debut have won well since.

However, he did not prove a great deal here, as the standard of his opposition was questionable and he was allowed his own way out in front before scoring by a couple of lengths.

It was still a notable result for the first season stallion Anodin as the Haras du Quesnay resident was responsible for the first two across the line.

Following a listed race double at La Teste de Buch last Saturday, Newmarket trainer Charlie Appleby arrived at Longchamp having notched an incredible nine victories from the previous 13 French races he had contested.

So it was no surprise when his representative, Ceratonia, was sent off favourite for the Group 3 Prix d’Aumale for juvenile fillies. She had a good go at securing win number 10, just finding one too good and probably running into a decent opponent in the shape of Roques, whose three-quarters of a length victory was her third in as many career starts.

Winning trainer Fabrice Chapped said: “I am very satisfied – Rocques is a very good filly and I have always loved her. Even before she ran she was doing impressive things on the gallops at home.”

The winning time was .06 secs quicker than Anodor managed later in the afternoon and the Prix Marcel Boussac (on October 7th) is the logical next step for this daughter of Lawman.

Bar gets the final Call

OWING to his win in the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay three weeks earlier, Holdthasigreen had to give 4lbs and more to his eight rivals in the Group 3 Prix Gladiateur over just short of two miles.

A combination of that weight imposition and fast ground proved just too much for the popular front-running gelding, though Holdthasigreen displayed all his usual bravery and will-to-win in refusing to allow Called To The Bar past until the very last stride. A four-year-old son of Henrythenavigator bred in Ireland by his owner, Sven Hanson, Called To The Bar is extremely lightly-raced having run just 10 times.

Gelded during the summer, he looks set to be a contender for the top European staying races for some time to come, starting with another clash with Holdthasigreen in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak on October 28th.
