BOUGHT by trainer Tom Mullins for just €2,500 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale (Part 2) last year, Powersville has been one of the stars of the Foran Equine Irish EBF Auction Series.

The daughter of Frozen Power races in the colours of Tom’s wife, Helen, and has raced six times this season. She has won twice, both races part of the Foran Equine Irish EBF series. On September 2nd she won a maiden at Navan, earning a first prize of almost €15,000 and also earned a Plus 10 bonus of €12,500. At Naas last Sunday Powersville won another €15,000 when winning the auction race there.

Recalling the day the filly caught his eye in the sales ring, Tom Mullins said: “She was a very nice-looking filly. A tiny bit small but she looked like a filly for racing. She walked well and, at that money, I could not fail to bring her home.”

The trainer continued: “I became a small bit doubtful when the sire wasn’t having any winners but she eventually won in Navan, so that was it, and she has picked up prize money every day she has been out since.”

Has Tom found any more like her at the sales this year? “I only bought one yearling at Tattersalls last week and they were a bit pricey at Goffs!”

SERIES SUPPORTER

Tom is obviously a huge fan of the Foran Equine Irish EBF Series: “It is a great incentive for everyone, especially those at the lower end of the scale. Perhaps the price could even be lowered as these races are restricted to horses that cost €72,000 or less. Maybe it could be lowered to €50,000.

“I think that if the horse goes to the breeze-up sales then that price should be included as well – not just the initial price of the yearling at the yearling sales. I do think it is a great idea and incentive to keep both owners and trainers busy.”

There was an extra bonus for Tom last Sunday, as you can see from the accompanying photograph.

“The goodie bag they gave me was worth the entry fee alone! The electrolytes and other products you receive from Foran Equine are brilliant!”

Now Tom and Helen have a decision to make - will they run Powersville at Navan (where she has already won) in a five-furlong listed race or go for the €120,000 Foran Equine Series Final at Naas on October 15th.

A win or placing at Navan would give Powersville some blacktype in her pedigree, while on the other hand the prize money at Naas is very generous. It’s a lovely position to be in with a filly who only cost €2,500.

Powersville is currently rated 82 and the Naas entries include Ball Girl (92), Quizical (90), Red Persian (88), Verhoyen (91) and several winners not yet rated.
