1:35 Return Of The Jumps Beginners Chase 2m

This looks a decent renewal with Surin, Jeremy’s Flame and Heaven Help Us all reaching a similar respectable standard over hurdles. The latter has a bit of experience over fences already, courtesy of her Sligo second, but that run was a little disappointing.

Surin is a course winner and looked set for a big season around this time last year when she went on to win the Fishery Lane Hurdle at Naas. The wheels came off then, however, and Jeremys Flame might be a little more solid. She has Grade 1 novice hurdle form to her name, having chased home Fiddlerontheroof in the Tolworth Hurdle. She also has a nice record when fresh.

SELECTION: JEREMYS FLAME

Court Maid was in good form towards the end of last season, winning a handicap hurdle at Naas off a mark of 126, but she elevated herself to a new level when much too good for Doctor Duffy in a beginners chase at Galway. That form is easily the pick of what is on offer here.

Rapid Response is in good form and should run well again, while Somptueux was an impressive winner at Naas, and though facing a tougher test now, he could well progress and looks the pick of the geldings.

SELECTION: COURT MAID

Next Best: Somptueux

Lord Lariat has been in good form since racing resumed, with two wins and two placings, and he can go close again today. His wins came over hurdles, elevating his mark to 110, and he went close to scoring over fences off a mark of 100 last time at Punchestown. He was a little unlucky to bump into one there, the pair coming 27 lengths clear. Although 5lb higher over fences now, he has the scope to progress.

Select Opportunity comes here on a hat-trick for local trainer Eddie Cawley and he is a clear danger. He won over hurdles here last time having previously attained his second win over fences at Sligo.

SELECTION: LORD LARIAT

Queens Brook, last year’s Champion Bumper third, is an exciting hurdle prospect and can make a winning debut. She has to concede weight all round here on account of her bumper win at Gowran last term but can do so as the level of her Cheltenham form, which came on just her second ever run on the track, is head and shoulders above her rivals. It also might be significant that Gordon Elliott won this race with a similar type in Fayonagh three seasons ago. Decimation makes his debut for Henry de Bromhead and Gigginstown. A €120,000 Land Rover purchase two years ago, he can make an impression.

Fauguernon just sneaks into the top of this 80-116 rated contest and may take advantage of what looks a weak heat. A winner at Leopardstown off a mark of 111 last St Stephen’s Day, he ran with credit for the remainder of the season, not least when a respectable mid division in the Ladbrokes Hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival. He was well held on his return run at Listowel recently but may just have got tired late on and looks more suited back at this two-mile trip.

Fassbender has had a few goes over hurdles but performed with some deal of credit on his latest start: fourth in a Roscommon maiden hurdle. He can have a say if building on that.

SELECTION: FAUGUERNON

Next Best: Fassbender

This looks wide open and a tentative vote goes to The Dreams Alive. This eight-year-old mare performed with credit on her handicap debut when fifth to Ricky Langford at Wexford. That was her first run in 186 days and she appeared to feel it late on. It was also her first start for Tom Foley, so there is plenty of scope for her to improve with a first-time tongue tie also applied. Courting Vickie is mildly interesting as well. She is a younger and less exposed mare who showed up quite well in a three-mile handicap hurdle at Listowel. Back in trip and on just her fifth ever start, she could give a good account.

It’s hard to ignore the claims of Jiving Jerry who sticks out like a sore thumb. James Barcoe’s gelding got off the mark over hurdles at Killarney in August and ran a respectable third at Gowran Park last week. He gets another chance off his new mark today, an easier target.

Call His Bluff was fourth to the selection at Killarney and was third at Cork prior to that, so he has bits and pieces of form that should see him competitive again.

Noel Meade won this bumper last season and he might take it again with Quite Incredible. This son of Shirocco ran well enough on his racecourse debut at Gowran last January, finishing third on testing ground. With that experience and any improvement from it, he’ll be tough to beat.

Mind Your Money was favourite for his bumper at Tipperary last weekend but had to be withdrawn after getting a kick at the start. There is clearly some level of confidence behind him so he is worth watching again.
