THE Cork and Waterford Injured Jockeys Fund is sure to receive a big boost at Knockanard point-to-point next month, when those behind the fund, and the organising Avondhu Foxhounds committee, come together to stage a charity race.

The February 16th fixture will see a two-mile flat race end the day’s action, and the charitable effort has drawn 19 riders that featured on the circuit from across a range of decades.

The race will see one of the most recently retired of the participants, Noel Fehily, who only hung up his riding boots last March, return to his roots, as he rode a total of 48 winners in point-to-points before turning professional. He will be joined in the race by Cheltenham Festival winning rider Colman Sweeney, while many of the other riders in the race have carved out very successful training careers since retiring, including Mick Winters, Liam Burke and Timmy Townend, ensuring there is sure to be a big crowd flocking to the Co Cork venue next month.

The full field is Brian Crowley, Philip Crowley, Philip O’Brien, Matt Collins, Liam Burke, Tom Lombard, Jeff Murphy, Timmy Townend, Garrett Cotter, Larry Murphy Snr, James ‘Corky’ Carroll, Ciaran Fennessy, Mick Winters, Mike Phillips, Olivia Hegarty, Sean Aherne, Aileen Sloan Lee, Noel Fehily and Colman Sweeney.

Each rider has a target of €400 to raise, with a €50 entry fee for each competing horse, adding to the fundraising efforts. Anyone who will not be able to attend on the day, but would like to contribute to the fundraising efforts, can do so online.
