MESSIDOR looked a filly with a bright future when running out an impressive winner at Dundalk on Wednesday.

Three last-time-out winners lined up for the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Race and it was the Joseph O’Brien-trained daughter of Vadamos who prevailed in style for the Blue Devil Racing Stable LLC.

Declan McDonogh took a lead on the 11/4 shot before she kicked on from front-runner Hale Bopp a furlong-and-a-half from home.

Messidor quickened up smartly inside the final furlong to post a two-and-three-quarter-length winning verdict.

The winning rider commented: “She’s improving mentally all the time and taking everything in her stride. She hit the line well today under a hand ride. She could be going the right way.”

The Crowne Plaza Hotel Handicap over one mile, two and a half furlongs was divided and both legs produced surprise results.

In the opener, 33/1 shot New Vocation travelled well into contention, for Joey Sheridan, early in the straight and kept on gamely when asked to hit the lead a furlong-and-a-half out to post a three-quarter-length win for the Phoenix Bloodstock Syndicate.

Trainer Keith Clarke paid tribute to his girlfriend Sarah Dixon for the part she played in preparing the Vocalised filly.

The Charles O’Brien-trained Crest Of A Wave made the breakthrough at the 23rd attempt in the second division.

Niall McCullagh produced the 28/1 shot to lead inside the final furlong and get the better of Gormanstown by a length in the colours of the Painestown Syndicate.

Juyush joy in a double for Orr

OISIN Orr had a good day at the all-weather venue partnering a late double courtesy of Tynamite and Juyush.

The Irish Racing Industry Fundraiser Handicap fell nicely for the former as David Marnane’s charge lunged late.

The 15/2 timed his run to perfection to get up close to home in the six-furlong contest and beat Pillar by three-quarters of a length.

“I think he just takes a bit of tricking, it worked out today,” said Orr of the Tynamite Syndicate-owned six-year-old.

In the concluding mile handicap Orr teamed up with the Sarah Lynam-trained Juyush as he defied a 9lb hike for his win at the course last month.

The Frankel gelding, in the colours of Direct Bloodstock Limited, stuck on gamely to hold Merchant Of Venice by a head to score at 9/2.

“Oisin dropped a rein (a furlong-and-a-half out) and gave me a heart attack but it was all okay in the end,” said Lynam afterwards.

The first division of that mile handicap had produced the closest finish of the day with the Pat Flynn-trained Whatharm flashing home late.

Conor Hoban had to navigate traffic early in the straight but got a good tune from Bridie Cooney’s gelding inside the final furlong as the 10/3 shot led in the last strides for a neck success in a bunch finish.

“We learned after running him back the last day a bit quick that he likes to be fresh,” revealed Hoban afterwards.

Family success for Commins

THE victory of Drish Venture in the six-furlong nursery was Tipperary trainer Donal Commins’ first visit to the winners’ enclosure in over six years.

Wayne Lordan made all on the Mehmas gelding to record a cosy two-and-three-quarter-length win for the Thurles owner/trainer who was delighted with the success of the 17/2 shot.

“My son Paul does most of the work with this horse so deserves a lot of the credit. We’re absolutely thrilled. He has been improving and improving and we thought he was going to win.”

The Denis Hogan-trained Boitron got his head in front in the seven-furlong claimer after a couple of runner-up efforts in similar contests.

Paddy Harnett produced the 13/8 favourite to lead a furlong out and he went on to post a length-and-a-quarter win for owners, the Premier Racing Club.

The four-year-old was later claimed for €5,000 by Ger O’Leary.
