THE wisdom of hosting the jewel-endowed show that we had in Britain last Saturday – Super Saturday, by all accounts – comes sharply into focus today. Last Saturday was wall-to-wall, the July Cup and the Bunbury Cup and the Summer Mile and the Old Newton Cup and top-class racing throughout. But it was just too much. It was difficult to keep track of it all.

We go from feast to famine in Britain today. The Hackwood Stakes and the Bet365 Mile are the feature races in England, decent races in their own right, but a long way from Bunbury Cups and Summer Miles, and races on which only four of the main firms were bothered to put up an ante post market during the week.

It’s like having a banquet one week and an apple for dinner the following week. At least it means that there should be more time and column inches to devote to the Darley Irish Oaks.
