FIVE jockeys will enjoy the thrill of riding in the Investec Derby for the first time on Saturday, three of them Irishmen.

Harry Bentley (Max Vega), Ben Curtis (Highland Chief), David Egan (Gold Maze), Martin Harley (Worthily) and Tom Marquand (Khalifa Sat) will be hoping to emulate jockeys such as Mickael Barzalona and Padraig Beggy, who won the 2011 and 2017 renewals having never previously ridden in the great race.

It’s a big day for Curtis who is having a great season as he builds on his successful all-weather campaign. He steps in for the ride on the Royal Ascot winner Highland Chief, who was then ridden by Rossa Ryan. David Egan’s father, John, rode Snoqualmie Boy who finished down the field in the 2006 running.

Tom Marquand misses out on the plum ride on the favourite having partnered him to his two wins.

Dettori’s 25th Derby

FRANKIE Dettori, snapped up for the favourite English King, boasts far more Derby experience than any other rider in the race. The 49-year-old, who took part in it for the first time 1992, will be riding in it for the 25th time.

Dettori took 15 attempts to win the Derby before scooping it for the first time aboard Authorized on 2007. He also won on Golden Horn in 2015.

Other Derby-winning jockeys in action on Saturday will be Padraig Beggy (Wings Of Eagles, 2017), William Buick (Masar, 2018), Martin Dwyer (Sir Percy, 2006), Seamie Heffernan (Anthony Van Dyck, 2019) and Ryan Moore (Workforce, 2010; Ruler Of The World, 2013).

The draw dilemma

THE big negative for the favourite English King came in yesterday’s draw when he was given stall one which has not produced a winner since Oath in 1999. Mogul has come out no better as no winner has come from stall two, while Kameko will break from 11 which has also not previously launched a Derby winner.

Breeding numbers

THERE are nine Derby runners sired by horse who have themselves won the Derby.

Amhran Na Bhfiann, Mogul, Russian Emperor, Vatican City and Serpentine are by Galileo. A win would give him his fifth winner of the classic.

English King and Mythical are by Camelot, Gold Maze is by the 2015 winner Golden Horn, and Mohican Heights is by Australia.

Two American stallions are represented, namely Kitten’s Joy – sire of Kameko – and Point Of Entry, the sire of Worthily.

The last US-bred to win was Kris Kin in 2003.
