Castle Star can go one better after failing by just a nose on his debut. Fozzy Stack’s son of Starspangledbanner ran a bit green at Cork, drifting to his left late on, but he still nearly managed to hold off It’ll Do My Day, the pair pulling clear.

Gaire As Ord is another with experience, having chased home the smart Tenebrism at Naas. Glounthaune is respected also, a 350,000 guineas purchase at Newmarket late last year, making his debut for Aidan O’Brien today.

SELECTION: CASTLE STAR

Cadamosto impressed with the manner of his victory on his debut at Dundalk last Saturday and he is taken to make it a quick two out of two. The son of No Nay Never showed good early speed on the Polytrack and then picked up very well to go away from main market rival Silver Surfer, recording a comparably good time to other races on the card. Ascot could be on the agenda and if it is, he should be winning today.

Missing Matron should test his mettle. She picked up very well to go four lengths clear of subsequent winner It’ll Do My Day over this course and distance last month, dealing very well with soft-ground conditions.

SELECTION: CADAMOSTO

Fiscal Rules is the most interesting proposition in what looks a very good race. Fifth in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on what was just his second ever start last season, he filled the same position on his next start in the Irish Derby, before getting off the mark over this distance in his maiden. There was lots to like about his seasonal debut two weeks ago in a six-furlong listed contest at Cork, a race he travelled well in, took up the running but just got caught for speed late on by the winner, Laugh A Minute. He kept going to the line though, holding off other speedier types and this step up to seven furlongs looks sure to suit.

Know It All comes out best at the weights off her rating of 110 but she may need this on her seasonal debut. Lancaster House won on his seasonal debut last season and returns to the scene of his two career best runs.

It’s difficult to get away from the claims of 2019 Derby fourth Broome who looked right back at the same standard of form from his three-year-old career when much too good for a number of these rivals in the Listed Devoy Stakes at Naas last month. The son of Australia pulled right away from Sunchart over the 10 furlongs there, prompting a rise to a rating of 115, which has him well clear of most of his rivals today.

Thundering Nights progressed nicely last season, producing her best at this track, and she has the scope to improve again this season so could run well today. Her stablemate Numerian is a solid sort who is much better than he showed behind Broome at Naas. Most of his good form has come over this course and distance also.

SELECTION: BROOME

Wordsworth represents the High Definition maiden form from last season but facing 21 rivals, he looks worth taking on at potentially short odds. Earl Of Tyrone will be a significantly bigger price but shouldn’t be written off after his good run to finish fourth to Earlswood on his seasonal debut at Navan. That represented a significant step up on what he did last season and he’ll be a threat to all if he can improve again today.

Zaynudin showed ability on his first start when third to Sir Lamorak (won impressively since) in a Dundalk maiden just over three weeks ago. He should benefit from that experience and could go well despite a poor draw.

SELECTION: EARL OF TYRONE

Jessica Harrington could have another nicely treated proposition in Tauran Shaman. The Zhang Yuesheng-owned five-year-old ran well in some big handicaps last season, and was always well supported in the market beforehand, hinting there was plenty of confidence behind him. Freshened up in the off season and down to a mark of 90, the son of Shamardal is worth another chance now on his seasonal debut.

Joseph O’Brien’s Never Forgotten gets the second vote though, given he showed good form to beat the very useful So Wonderful at Gowran Park when last seen. With just three runs on the book, he has loads of scope to improve again.

Valhalla’s Dream put up a creditable effort when third to Horoscope over this course and distance last month, and he can build on that day. Tony Mullins’s three-year-old led most of the way but just got a little tired late on, which was understandable. He can progress now with the experience and race fitness banked.

Saatty finished fourth in that contest, when making his debut as well, so shouldn’t be too far away, while Notoriously Risky ran a big race on his seasonal return, when just edged out by Watercolormemories at Naas.

Teddy Boy ran well on his first start in 2021 when sixth to Conversant at Navan and returning to this course and distance could do the trick for Eddie Lynam’s six-year-old. Indeed his last run over this course yielded a close third off a 2lb-higher mark in a similarly big field to today’s race.

The good old servant Fit For Function shouldn’t be discounted on his return to turf, especially given he hasn’t been running too badly lately. He has been given a fair chance by the handicapper, now rated 57 which is 13lbs below his last winning mark.

Majeski Man finished a good fifth in a maiden here last season and is worth watching now on his handicap debut for Denise Foster.

SELECTION: TEDDY BOY
