THE Irish Injured Jockeys was established in 2014 in order to increase awareness and raise much needed funds to support injured jockeys in Ireland.

Michael Higgins, the general manager of the IIJ, reports: “Throughout the year we have two main events, the Corinthian Challenge and Jog For Jockeys. Up to 50 events could be run in aid of the charity, ranging from local societies up to Cheltenham.

“We never really know how many events will happen, but we’re grateful for each one.

“We find that there are people all over the world who are willing to help. There’s a lady from New York who, with her 10 friends, is going to a fun-run over Brooklyn Bridge. We hope to send out some Jog For Jockey t-shirts. We want to see some pictures too!”

Higgins added: “Peter Molony, from Rathmore, did the Mongol Derby over 1,000km in China. It genuinely is so varied what people will do for the charity. Nationwide recently broadcast a programme, which reached over 380,000 people. We’re so pleased at how well it did.”

HUNTSMAN’S CHALLENGE

One upcoming event is the inaugural Berney Bros. Huntsman’s Challenge, which will take place before racing on Sunday, November 20th at Punchestown Racecourse.

Huntsmen from 11 different packs will take part in a demonstration cross-country challenge over a mile and a half which will include the famous Punchestown banks course.

Each huntsman must raise a minimum of €500 for the Irish Injured Jockeys to take part in this event.

The Irish Injured Jockeys recently released their Christmas cards and calendars for 2017. They can be purchased online or at various outlets throughout the country, such as Horse Racing Ireland, TRI Equestrian, the Turf Club and the Curragh.
