BALMORAL

HANDICAP 1M

THE bookmakers did not need a solidly-backed favourite going in at the end of the afternoon but it happened anyway as David O’Meara’s Lord Glitters and Danny Tudhope came from well off the pace to storm through the final furlong and get up close home in the Balmoral Handicap. Sent off at 3/1 after strong support during the day, the winner, another grey, nailed Gm Hopkins by a neck with Dark Red and Accidental Agent taking the minor places.

Not with O’Meara for long after a successful career, especially on soft ground in France, Lord Glitters had finished fast to be second over seven furlongs on his first run for the yard. Many observers made a mental note that day, though the four-year-old put them through the wringer here and was still in the last pair with two furlongs to go. His finishing burst from then on was truly startling and may even mean his handicapping days are over.

“He got into all sorts of trouble but has an amazing turn of foot,” O’Meara smiled. “He was bought to fill the boots of Mondialiste, who was retired this week, and keep owner Geoff Turnbull’s colours flying. I’d watched his races in France and he cost €270,000 but to win like that on Champions Day means he’s repaid it already. I hope he’s a group horse.”
