THE French have sent a talented squad to Del Mar for the Breeders’ Cup this evening. The quartet will not be among the leading fancies but they would all appear to have an each-way chance of being in the money.

Pascal Bary will saddle Senga (16/1) in the Filly and Mare Turf where the American-bred daughter of Blame should have her preferred good or even faster ground. Owned and bred by the Niarchos family, Senga (Agnes spelt backwards) reached the pinnacle of her career when winning the Prix de Diane Longines. She will again come up against Rhododendron who was pulled-up after bleeding badly. She had her revenge in the Prix de l’Opera but Senga hated the soft ground on that occasion.

ISOLATED

The Del Mar ground should also be greatly in favour of the Jean-Claude Rouget trained, Zelzal (16/1) in the Mile Turf. A Group 1 winner at three, his season was somewhat curtailed as he was isolated in a quarantine barn after an outbreak of equine herpes in his stable.

The son of Sea The Stars has yet to win this year due to adverse underfoot conditions. He hated the surface (soft) when fourth in the Sussex Stakes and did again in the Prix de la Foret where he took sixth place.

Francis Graffard runs Karar (25/1) with Frankie Dettori in the saddle. He finished ahead of Zelzal in the Foret and won the Prix du Pin neatly before. This son of Invincible Spirit appears to act on all grounds.

Talismanic (20/1) tackles the turf race for Godolphin and Andre Fabre. This consistent colt prefers good going over which he won the Group 2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil in July. He was not so at home on the soft when third in the Prix Foy and has not run since.
