THE trailer for the upcoming film Being AP alone is worth watching more than once and it looks guaranteed that Being AP is a sure fire hit.
Few National Hunt seasons could have held so many highs and low as A.P.’s last one. It will be fascinating, even if A.P. has already been open with his emotions, to get inside his family’s experiences of the last 12 months.
We get used to seeing bad falls but rarely see the reaction or the strain on those closest to the protagonists who are consigned to watch. Add in cinematic sound effects to the action and it almost becomes a horror story out on the track.
It looks and sounds the real deal, the agony and ecstasy and a proper portrait of a man many would have considered obsessed with winning. There’s never been a decent racing film that went to the core of the sport and its participants. Champions was nice but it was a different tale of a man recovering from serious illness inspired by the dream of winning racing’s biggest race. We never needed to see the day to day nitty, gritty of the racetrack. And it was an actor playing a part - this is 100% the real thing and it looks and sounds as such.
We’ve never got under the skin of the sport, never been offered the pain compared to sports like boxing or wrestling have on the big screen. Who’d have thought this time last year as the jumpers come back to training that we’d be seeing A.P. at the Toronto Film Festival instead of somewhere like Southwell.
