1. Amedeo Modigliani

(A.P. O’Brien)

This twice-raced son of Galileo wasn’t seen again after his Galway Festival maiden success in early August but he could quite easily develop into a classic colt in 2018. He really caught the eye when making his debut on Irish Derby weekend and he produced a display of some authority at Galway. Admittedly he faced quite a straightforward task there but his performance bore all the hallmarks of a potential Group 1 performer.

2. Latrobe

(J.P. O’Brien)

A son of Camelot and a half-brother to the very smart Diamond Fields, this colt made his debut on the same Leopardstown card as Contingent. He had to settle for second behind James Cook in his maiden but he turned in a promising performance and there could be some good races to be won with him next year. Despite being quite green and raw, he was beaten just half a length by a colt with previous experience and he looks as though he could sharpen up a good deal from this run.

3. Contingent

(D.K. Weld)

Dermot Weld endured a trying time over the course of the 2017 season but in the closing stages of the season he took the wraps of some juveniles of real note and foremost among these was this daughter of Frankel. She was burdened with a stall 18 draw for her debut in a one-mile fillies’ maiden at Leopardstown in October but she readily overcame this inconvenience to defeat some useful types with real style. Far greater tests lie in wait but don’t be surprised to see her hold her own against some of the luminaries of her generation.
