THE ‘will they, won’t they’, who runs where, in the championship races is one of the most annoying things about the Cheltenham Festival. Lossiemouth, Gaelic Warrior, Fact To File are the main culprits. Yes, you can back all of them NRNB but they will determine the shape of their respective races.

It might be time to try add a bit force to these decisions as in the Breeders’ Cup where you have to nominate a first preference option for your entry.

There’s generally little excuse for the lingering on, in races at this level. You know your horse’s ability. You know the opposition and its ability. You know your available jockeys. And by now, you know the likely going conditions. There’s really no excuse for not giving running intentions a few days out. Or certainly giving a strong indication on a first preference. Talk The Talk and Romeo Coolio also still have options in the main Grade 1 entries, that could go in different directions.

Hopefully Lossiemouth is given the chance that she deserves, to tackle the best in the Champion Hurdle. It’s what sport should be about, to try and win at the highest level.

Who doesn’t want to try at the Premier League. Who would say, I’m European Champion, who cares about the Olympics? I may be hoping the sporting force is with Brighterdaysahead come Tuesday.

Bankers or blowouts

WITH space limited this week, this is the shortest Cheltenham tipping column. It’s a yay or lay to these.

  • Supreme: What an opening hot contest. Is Mighty Park “a monster” off one run? Can’t have El Cairos here with his dodgy jumping, he’s a nay.
  • Arkle: Can Kopek make all? Lulamba a safer bet
  • Fred Winter: La Luna Artista the value. Dignam interesting.
  • Champion Hurdle: Heart wants Brighterdaysahead to win this.
  • Turners: No Drama This End, form solid but well beaten in the Bumper last year. Not for me.
  • Brown Advisory: Conditions could play a part. Stamina of Wendigo preferred to Final Demand
  • Champion Chase: Majborough just to stand up!
  • Cross Country: Favori De Champdou.
  • Bumper: The Mourne Rambler the value.
  • Jack Richards Novices: Kim Roque interesting if here, or in the Kim Muir.
  • Mares Novice: Bambino Fever should be best
  • Ryanair: Fact To File if he runs
  • Stayers: Ballyburn and Impose Toi both over priced.
  • Kim Muir: Jeriko was a blowout – he doesn’t like jumping fences, but could the O’Connor mastery bring him home?
  • Triumph: Be wary of Selma off just one run, on different conditions here.
  • Mares Chase: Panic Attack looks too big.
  • Gold Cup: Heart wanted Galopin before news of his withdrawal broke on Friday night. Spillane’s would be heart-warming too. But head says The Jukebox Man. Antepost bet wants Haiti Couleurs
