WITH Epsom in full flow, it seems strange to be talking about a little race at Nottingham last weekend, writes Page Fuller. However, the win times don’t lie, and tell us that there was a progressive filly on handicap debut competing in the 17:00 fillies’ race on Sunday.

William Haggas clearly respected Supermodel as a juvenile, pitching her straight into listed company after an impressive victory at Newbury on racecourse debut. That proved a little disappointing, but back from a break, on better ground than she saw last season, and a furlong and a half further to run over, she confirmed that promise she had shown.

Before diving too deeply into the data, the first thing that stood out was her win time. She ran a time 3.20 seconds quicker than our Pat Time, which is the time we would have expected the race to be run in considering the going, track, distance and race conditions. This earned her a score of 9.3 out of 10 for her efforts, far quicker than any other time indexes recorded on the day.

The other thing that impressed me was her stamina to the line. They went a good gallop in front, and she galloped powerfully through the final three furlongs, completely outstaying her rivals. Her final furlong time of 12.61 seconds was over 0.6 seconds faster than any other horse in the race.

She won this with her opening mark of 83, and there’s plenty to suggest that over trips of a mile to a mile and two, she is one to keep an eye on throughout the summer.
