A LIGHT breeze and sunshine ensured that conditions were fast at Newmarket last week.
Our time index metrics demonstrated that nicely: The average time index on day one was 4.5, day two 5.1 and day three 6.9, writes Page Fuller.
With all that said, Jancis’ time index of 8.3 in the Dahlia Stakes on Sunday was still very impressive. It was the highest time index of the meeting, but not just courtesy of the drying ground. It was the win time that came in fastest compared to the meeting average.
The early race pace was strong, and hold-up tactics benefited the winner. The two horses who made the running clocked two ‘fast’ furlongs and ‘very fast’ furlongs in the first half mile. To put this speed in further context, every runner clocked a sub-11 seconds through furlongs three and four.
This, along with Jancis’ finishing speed percentage (FSP) of 97.21%, demonstrates how much of a stamina test the race became, especially since the par FSP for mile and a furlong at Newmarket is 101.61%.
Her top speed of 41.89mph is the fastest she’s ever clocked on the track. However, it was the slowest in last weekend’s race. So everything points towards a horse that will appreciate a step up in trip.
She has twice run creditably over slightly further, but has more generally been campaigned over a mile. It’s often difficult to say a five-year-old is improving, but if connections give her a chance to make use of her stamina potential, she could have an exciting campaign ahead of her.
